Scripture Reading: Hebrews 12.1-2 (NRSV)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

  • You are about to embark on your Lenten spiritual journey. Maybe this is an annual tradition for you. Perhaps you’ve never thought seriously of the season of Lent as an opportunity for your personal spiritual growth. I wonder what do you need to “lay aside” as you begin this season. What is clinging a little too closely, preventing you from having the full freedom to experience God’s presence in your life? Spend ten minutes writing about this “thing” you need to lay aside and at the end, offer your writing to God in prayer, asking for the freedom to, at least during your daily devotional, the ability to lay it aside so that you might move forward in your faith.
