MaxFest 2021

Join us for a weekend of Maxwell Street fun! There will be plenty of outdoor activities, some eating, sports, art, a special worship service and a block party with our friends down the street, Calvary Baptist and First United Methodist. See details about activities below:

9:00am 2 Mile Run/Walk – UK Arboretum

Meet in the parking lot of the University of Kentucky Arboretum  to start your day off on the right foot. We’ll walk, jog, or run our way around the loop. Nate’s Coffee and North Lime Donuts at the finish line.

9:30am UK Campus Tree Diversity Walk (Part of Tree Week)

Join Helen Richardson  on October 16th at 9:30am to explore the rich diversity of tree species planted on the UK campus.  The trees on the UK campus include species from the state of Kentucky, western USA, and from temperate zone of Asia.  We will consider what makes each species an interesting story. Please meet in front of the T.H. Morgan Biological Sciences building, on the side facing Rose Street.

10:00am Junior Naturalist event at McConnell Springs – Free

Children will learn how to identify a type of tree by looking primarily at its leaves which are often the easiest way for quick tree identification. They will also learn to look at the tree bark and tree seeds for further tree identification clues. Throughout the day, we’ll be giving away activity bags.

10:30am Pickleball at Kirklevington

Ready to try a new sport? Already a Pickleball pro? Lauren’s parents introduced the sport to the Falco family and they now play regularly. Join Matt, his family, and some friends from the Kentucky Pickleball Association at Kirklevington Park to try it out. Paddles and pickleballs provided. Good for almost all ages. It’s sort of like tennis but on a smaller scale and slightly different rules. It’s lots of fun!

12:30pm – 2:00pm Youth Chili Cook-off and Pumpkin Carving

Who can make the best Chili at Maxwell Street? Enter your chili to find out if yours is the best! We invite everyone to come enjoy the chili and benefit the E7 Kids’ Cafe program doing so. $3.00 for a bowl and eat as much as you’d like! Apple Cider, corn bread, and all the classic chili toppings as well. Outside in the courtyard behind Maxwell Street. The Youth will be helping kids carve pumpkins (cost to cover pumpkin is $5) Register online to attend.

3:00pm UK Art Museum

Dan Solberg, a Maxwell Street member, is The UK Art Museum Educational Coordinator. He’ll be doing a talk on artwork at the museum.

4:00pm Talk and Tasting at Rock House Brewing

Let’s get to know one of our local brewers from Rock House Brewing. Their mission is to produce a wide range of top quality beers and provide a welcoming environment for people of all demographics. Afterwards, we’ll walk over to the Julietta Market. The Julietta Market speaks to the issues of our time, as a transformative avenue for social entrepreneurship, a change agent for capacity building services, a mentor in programming and access to networks and connections, and as a continuation of the community conversation on how equitable access to opportunity informs personal prosperity and social growth.

6:00pm Table for 6, 7 or More.

Sign up to host or join a dinner party. You’re welcome to put together your own group or just sign up and the church will place you in a group. Hosts can decide whether to provide dinner, make it a potluck, or a combination of the two. We’re encouraging backyard dinners. Take out works as well!

9:00am The Work of the Presbyterian Church (USA)

Spend an hour with our own Rich Copley learning about important things happening at the denominational level of the church. Rich is a Communications Strategist for the PC(USA).
